Studies

A collection about how web design became what it is. Where its conventions came from, why pages look the way they do, and which of those decisions still hold.

I work as a web designer and developer, and this is the part of the work that has no client attached to it. Some of it is history, some of it is measurement, and some of it is an argument I want to make carefully rather than in a sentence.

Every study is researched against primary sources where they survive. Each one says plainly where the evidence stops and my reading of it begins, and lists what it was built from at the end. I would rather publish one piece a year that holds up than twelve that read well.

Nothing here is published until its sources have been checked. If you want to know when the first study goes up, write to me and I will tell you.
